Own one of these?
(MSX-M2GS)
(MSX-M1GST)
(PSP-MP1G)
There’s a good chance that if you’ve formatted, it may be displaying and not allowing the full capacity of the card! How could Sony not do even the simple task of formatting properly? Yipes.
If a normal medium has been normally formatted, its free space (of the user area) shall satisfy the condition listed below. (If smaller, the phenomenon mentioned above might be active.)
- MSX-M1GST + PSP-MP1G: 940MB or larger
- MSX-M2GS : 1850MB or larger
Full details below..
We regret profoundly but we have found a phenomenon on some of our media that might occasionally occur during the process of formatting (initialization process).
Those media are MSX-M1GST and MSX-M2GS of Memory Stick PRO Duo; the IC recording medium of Sony Corporation, as well as PSP-MP1G; that of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Our thorough investigation revealed that when any of those media is formatted, the size of free space in capacity might have decreased temporarily until it is reformatted. This happens rarely, however, in the event that you come across such a phenomenon, the countermeasure described below will solve it and achieve a normal performance of a medium.
We would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that this phenomenon did or might cause you. Your generous understanding and cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
Target Memory Stick
- Memory Stick PRO Duo of Sony Corporation : MSX-M1GST (1GB) and MSX-M2GS (2GB)
- Memory Stick PRO Duo of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. : PSP-MP1G (1GB)** Including Memory Stick PRO Duo (1GB) sold together with PSP™ (PlayStation® Portable) Giga Pack “PSP-100x G1” and “PSP-100x G1CW” (Value allocated to “x” stands for the destination of the product : e.g. UK model is PSP-1003 G1)
Phenomenon
When a target medium is formatted (initialized), the size of its free space in capacity might momentarily look as if it has become smaller than the actual size.
Note: Even if such a phenomenon occurs, it is still possible to use the medium for taking photos or writing/reading/storing data. However, the actual free space will not be available to its full capacity
Countermeasure
In the event that such a phenomenon as mentioned above happens, we would like you to reformat the medium so that it will restore its actual free space.
Caution: Before a medium is formatted, any important data in the medium must be saved to another media or to a PC. All the data in the medium will be erased when formatted.
Normal Size of Free Space
- Confirmation by the actual size of free space. If a normal medium has been normally formatted, its free space (of the user area) shall satisfy the condition listed below. (If smaller, the phenomenon mentioned above might be active.)
- MSX-M1GST : 940MB or larger
- MSX-M2GS : 1850MB or larger
- PSP-MP1G : 940MB or larger
- Confirmation by the number of recordable photos and recording time. You can check whether the size of free space is normal or not by the number of recordable photos and recording time shown on the users manual of the product you are using. The table shown on the following URL can be also utilized as standards for the size of free space. (After having formatted a medium, if the number of recordable photos or recording time turns out smaller than that written in the users manual or URL, the phenomenon mentioned above might be active.http://www.memorystick.com/en/ms/variety1.htmlThis URL introduces the size of content recordable by each medium.
Other Notices
- Any Memory Stick shall be formatted (initialized) by a Memory Stick compliant product at your hand. (How to format it depends on each compliant product. Please check the user manual.)
- When a medium is formatted by a PC, the OS-embedded formatter shall not be used. If used, the medium might work for neither your Memory Stick compliant product nor any others.
- If the countermeasure introduced above does not solve the phenomenon, or if you have any other inquiry, feel free to contact us.
