Sony Japan has announced two new Media Center PC’s in its TP1 series today. The minimalistic circle design returns, with matching remote and wireless keyboard. The new VGX-TP1DQ/B and VGX-TP1D models are feature rich as usual, but leave Sony Insider curious – what happens when the hardware becomes obsolete and the user wants to upgrade? Many Media Center PC’s released these days are able to be modified (video card, ram, etc); upgrading this device seems difficult. A price one must pay for such a tight build.
Nonetheless, the VGX-TP1D is featured in pearl white and has a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T8100 processor under the hood with 2GB of RAM. Storage includes a 320GB hard drive with a GeForce 8400M GT graphics card (VGA + HDMI), a dual-layer DVD writer, and integrated WiFi (802.11b/g). The black VGX-TP1DQ/B has a larger capacity 500GB hard drive and a Blu-ray burner (!). Both units feature four USB 2.0 ports, 4-pin FireWire, a multicard reader, and TV tuner with Windows Vista Home Premium. The new VP1 series should be available (in Japan) for ¥150,000 ($1,392) / ¥200,000 ($1,856), respectively.
