I’ve been covering Sony products for a long time. When I first started at Minidisc Community Forums I was very excited to try my hand at reporting information about a product I enjoyed using. I wanted to make a difference in the experience and have everyone work together to manifest a positive experience. As time progressed, I realized that there was common trait in Sony products – the names are just bland. Alot of the Minidisc recorders and players from Sony and other companies just had these names that made them impossible to discuss with others who were less knowledgeable.
Things got a little worse when I started ATRACLife with my good friend Ishii; we were exposed to even more model names with esoteric acronyms and numbers. Sony Insider completed my journey into the madness of the endless abyss of nomenclature. There is obviously code in the product names; sometimes designating a higher class than other similar, less feature-rich models. For example, the Bravia television series has:
- X series
- W series
- D series
- V series
- S series
- U series
- G series
Wow. It really makes you wonder that this is only one tree in the Sony family of products. There are hundreds of other trees. It truly is unbelieveable how many products Sony makes on a consistent basis, and sometimes, those product names overlap. We saw such an example of this overlapping today with the DSC-T700 camera and Sony Ericsson T700 cell phone. When a consumer searches T700 in Google or another search engine they will get results for both products. Perhaps it’s not that big of a deal, but I just think there is better choices out there, more interesting names. Rolly was kinda cool, but the product is too much of an expensive gimmic. Why not give better nicknames to the more successful products?
