After twelve long years, the award winning Broadway musical rent is coming to an end. On August 20th and September 7th (the last show), nine Sony cameras will record one of the final performances and distribute them in theaters nationwide. According to Playbill, “A composite of the best performances from those two evenings — including what will likely be emotional moments from the final Broadway show — will subsequently be broadcast in movie theatres nationwide. Audiences around the country will have the chance to view the Broadway production of Rent Sept. 24 and 25 (evening screenings) and Sept. 27 and 28 (afternoon screenings).”
The idea of bringing theater to the big screen in this fashion is relatively new, but this creativity is a growing practice amongst movie companies as blockbusters are becoming fewer and farther between. It is common to see previews now of special one night only live concerts that marketers are providing to combat the competition of at-home entertainment mediums such as OnDemand, Netflix, etc
The filming is part of a new business venture launched by Sony Pictures Releasing, which is entitled The Hot Ticket. The Hot Ticket, according to a press release, will “distribute event programming, including popular music concerts, the performing arts, and sporting events in high definition digital projection to select movie theaters nationwide.”
