BSkyB Chooses Sony to Help Build New Broadcasting Facility

Sony today announced its appointment as lead systems integrator by British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) to support the technical fit out of its state-of-the-art new broadcasting facility. Due for completion in 2011, the building will deliver flexible HD capable multi-platform content production facilities and support BSkyB’s strategic multi platform playout and distribution requirements.

This project represents one of the largest infrastructure builds in the UK broadcast industry to date. As lead integrator, Sony will support the end-to-end technical fit out to create a more flexible and collaborative working environment across new studios, post-production rooms and broadcast facilities. Design architects and SI experts from Sony’s Professional Services division have a strong track record with BSkyB, including the delivery of its HD studios and the migration of its play-to-air operations from tape to server based output.

Commenting on the announcement, Troy Smith, Director, Technology Platforms, BSkyB said: “This will be the most technologically advanced broadcast facility of its kind in the UK, enhancing both the way we work and the scope of the content we deliver. It’s going to be a fantastic working environment that will enable our production teams to deliver more great entertainment in more ways for our customers.

“We are creating a multi-platform content distribution hub for all our media outlets. This includes receiving content through emerging channels such as internet-based delivery. The building will use the latest in digital production technology – enabling greater flexibility, speed and opportunities. Sony understands our values and the importance we place on HD and file-based technology, and I believe both organisations share the same vision for this continually evolving industry.

“Sony’s Professional Services team has a strong track record with Sky. I am confident we can design and deliver systems that provide quality and efficiency to their business,” explained Matthew Coombs, Director, Sony Professional Services, Sony Europe. “Our systems and media knowledge will ensure that we enable BSkyB to remain at the forefront of digital content delivery with the creation of this new facility.”
