SanDisk Releases 16GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) Before Sony

SanDisk has sent out a press release noting that they are now producing 16GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory cards for the initial retail price of $129.99. What’s truly surprising is that Sony, the creator of this storage medium, doesn’t currently offer a matching M2 module at this storage capacity. After checking Google, Amazon, and even SonyStyle, the highest capacity Memory Stick Micro that Sony has on the market is 8GB. I find it rather strange that Sony wouldn’t simultaneously release a 16GB version of this memory stick alongside SanDisk. However, this release tells Sony Insider that Sony will release a comparable memory stick to match SanDisk’s offering very soon.

Don’t worry – the 16GB Memory Stick Micro will be compatible with all devices able to accept the memory card. The new 16GB capacity will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November  the only major retailers in the United States to carry this mobile storage capacity in 2008.

FYI – the Memory Stick Micro (M2) technology maxes out at 32GB, and we’re halfway there. I wouldn’t expect to see a 24GB because Sony has never released a 24GB memory stick in any form. I assume the next update will be the 32GB and that will be that. But now we wonder, what’s next? Memory Stick MiniMicro? Memory Stick Micro Duo? Memory Stick Nano? Memory Stick MiniMini? Memory Stick You’llLoseMe? Names inspired by the-Bikini.com.
