Sony Sells 85,000 PlayTV’s In First Week

Posted on

Sony has announced the PlayTV has sold 85,000 units in its initial release week. PlayTV is a twin-channel DVB-T tuner peripheral with DVR software which allows users to watch and record television programs to the hard drive of a Playstation 3 console for later viewing. What is most surprising is that the PlayTV is currently only available for sale in the United Kingdom, which is a strong indication that once this device is available across Europe, Sony will see massive sales. The PlayTV module costs £70, and we have previously covered its functionality.

Because North American markets, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be using the ATSC digital standard (and the latter two are currently early in their digital transition), it is unlikely they will see the PlayTV device because of compatibility issues.
