Sony of Canada Ltd. is proud to be the recipient of a Recycling Council of Ontario 2008 Waste Minimization Award. The Recycling Council of Ontario presented Sony Canada with the top-level Platinum award in the Business Category for its waste minimization initiatives, specifically the expansion of its recycling program to include all old Sony products. Sony Canada was also recognized for its environmental leadership in all aspects of its business, including closed loop stewardship from product design to recycling.
“The kind of individual responsibility that Sony Canada is taking through its waste reduction initiatives demonstrates its environmental leadership,” said Jo-Anne St. Godard, Executive Director of the Recycling Council of Ontario. “Sony Canada clearly understands the economic values and environmental outcomes that come from sustainable business practices, and our Awards program is intended to profile such champions.”
“We are proud to be recognized as a leader in environmental sustainability in Canada”, said Doug Wilson, President and COO, Sony Canada. “We continue to work towards our goal of diverting all Sony products from landfill, and making electronics recycling more accessible to Canadians.”
With the goal of diverting all of its products from landfill, Sony Canada has partnered with Global Electric Electronic Processing Inc. (GEEP), and with Sony’s network of authorized service centres, opened 25 collection sites across Canada, with a further 25 to open by 2010. These sites accept all Sony products for recycling, including larger items like televisions and stereos, at no charge.
Sony Canada’s expanded recycling program is an addition to the existing Sony Notebook Computer Trade-in Program, the Sony Style retail recycling program that collects all handheld Sony products, operational recycling activities, and leadership roles with provincial stewardship programs across Canada.
