Sony Showing Off Innovative Medical-Grade Equipment At RSNA Conference

Sony is highlighting new 47- and 42-inch (viewable area, measured diagonally) high-definition LCD displays, (models FWD-S47H1, FWD-S42H1) at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) conference this week.

With a special brightness feature suitable for viewing DICOM images, the large scale, high-brightness monitors support gamma curve compliance (GSDF – Grayscale Standard Display Function) with DICOM medical standards at a significantly more affordable price than compliant diagnostic monitors. The new models provide a highly accurate display of medical images for demanding, non-diagnostic applications such as the operating room (OR), intensive care unit (ICU), nurse’s stations or training and education purposes. Both support full 1920 x 1080-pixel HD resolution for the most advanced video quality.  The displays’ 700 cd/m2 Brightness Boost setting enables superb detail and clarity, even in brightly lit environments such as the OR, ICU and conference room.

“These new monitors are ideal for a wide range of non-diagnostic viewing applications from the operating room to the conference room, and provide a cost-effective alternative to fully DICOM compliant flat panel displays,” said Julie Holodak, manager of radiology product marketing for Sony Electronics. “In addition, they can display full HD surgical video and deliver picture quality beyond the typical reference monitor with lower brightness ratings.”

Expanding its commitment to high-performance, affordable radiology printing, Sony is showing its FilmStation™ Mammography Film Imager (model UP-DF750) at the Radiology Society of North America (RSNA) Conference. On display as a working prototype, it features a high-resolution thermal printing system and specially engineered blue thermal high-density film. The new printer is optimized for full-field digital mammography (FFDM) applications and designed to help facilities meet Mammography Quality Standard Act (MQSA) regulations.

Like other members of the FilmStation family, the UP-DF750 has been designed for digital printing and delivers unprecedented speed, image quality and flexibility in a compact footprint.  When available, the imager will yield high-resolution, detailed images in 606 dpi at an ultra-fast print time of approximately 90 sheets per hour.  The new film imager strengthens Sony’s ongoing commitment to the women’s imaging market, which began with ultra-sound printing more than 25 years ago.

“When mammography sites go digital, the need for printing images still remains strong,” said Julie Holodak, radiology product marketing manager for Sony Electronics. “For consultations, second opinions and treatment planning, mammography image sharing is frequently accomplished with hard copies.

Rounding out its printer lineup this week at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Conference, Sony is showcasing a new dye-sublimation printer – model UP-DR80MD.  An ideal choice for full-page ultrasound applications, the high-performance printer combines excellent image quality with ease-of-use and low cost of ownership. The new printer is the smallest full-page, medical-grade, dye-sublimation printer available today. The UP-DR80MD printer measures 12.5 inches x 16.75 inches x 8.13 inches (WxDxH), and weighs just 25 lbs.

“This compact, reliable printer is ideal for physicians who need to combine multiple ultrasound images on a single page for referring physicians,” said Julie Holodak, product marketing manager for Sony Electronics.  “This  medical-grade device can provide centralized or cart based printing as an alternative to non-medical ink jet printers which are typically very costly to operate.”
