Will We See A Wireless Sony Reader Later This Month?

Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that they received an invitation to a Sony Reader event in New York on August 25th. There is speculation that this could be the event that launches the wireless Sony Reader that has been on the mind of many ever since Sir Howard Stringer, CEO and President of Sony, had promised that such a model was coming. Sony representatives had also promised an announcement “later this summer.”

There’s nothing in queue for Sony on the FCC though, which means that if a wireless model does come, it probably won’t be available until the holiday season.

With the recently announced PRS-300 and PRS-600 at $199 and $299 respectively, a wireless model would at least cost $350-399. Is that price point too high? I’ve admired the wireless capabilities of the Kindle, but the price has always been a little too premium. It seemed that Sony had more support with its Reader line than I’ve ever seen when it was revealed that the PRS-300 was going to cost only $199. Is adding a premium, wireless high-priced model the right choice?
