Sony is about to change the public’s perception of 3D implementation in consumer products forever with the introduction of a prototype 360° Stereoscopic 3D display device. This introduction seems to be a natural progression to enhance the appeal of 3D for consumers who don’t want to wear glasses all the time.
The device was shown off on October 22nd at the Digital Content EXPO 2009 in the National Museum of Emerging Science and Tokyo International Exchange Center and be presented by Sony President Ryoji Chubachi. The prototype, shown above in a brilliant high resolution picture (click to enlarge) is the framework for a whole new slew of 3D products.
In its current form, it is a 3D display within a cylinder viewable from 360° without the need for glasses. The prototype device has a small stature at 13cm diameter and a height of 27cm, and a resolution of 96 × 128 with 24-bit color. The most interesting part however is the fact that Sony has assumed that they would apply this technology towards 360° Stereoscopic 3D digital advertisements, exhibition events, three-dimensional medical image visualization, web shopping, virtual pets, art appreciation, three-dimensional photo frame, and three-dimensional television and telephones.
Sony has a video to demonstrate this technology:
Stunning.
