Several articles, originating from Gamasutra, have cited that the Playstation 2 was the most played console of 2008 according to Nielsen research. Is it really surprising to read this figure when Sony has sold 140 million PS2’s since launch? The low price point of the console was and still is a sweet spot for cash strapped consumers looking to have access to a huge library of games. Furthermore, the low cost of PS2 titles is fantastic. Surprisingly, it seems that the XBOX has gains of several percent in usage of the PS3, which was not the case for any other current generation consoles (XBOX360, Wii). We did find it surprising that the Wii ranks rather low in terms of use in the Nielsen tested homes, as it has been a huge hit for Nintendo and seemingly gained market dominance. Are people just buying the Wii and really not playing it?
CNET compiled top console usage into a list, which we will cite as well in interest to our readers:
- PlayStation 2 (30.2 percent)
- Xbox 360 (18.3 percent)
- Wii (13.5 percent)
- Xbox (9.1 percent)
- PlayStation 3 (7.7 percent)
- GameCube (4.4 percent)
- Other (16.9 percent)
