We received a tip from a visitor named kikkoman who set up a small Linux virtual machine that should, for most people, re-enable Hulu content on the PS3. It provides a web proxy configuration that only effects Hulu related network traffic, thus not slowing down gaming or making the PS3 otherwise dependent on the VM’s proxy. It’s very interesting to see the lengths people will go to achieve functionality that should just be included with the console. It boggles my mind that Sony has not signed with some sort of streaming content provider for movies, television shows, and so forth – it would fit perfectly right between Playstation Home and Playstation Store. Now that I think of it, why don’t they just install a Hulu clone in Playstation Home with the option for content to go full screen? That would be killer. You could have watching parties in your home space or in a theater, just like XBox360 has with their avatars and the ability to watch streaming movies together.
kikkoman also mentioned a nice alternative to Hulu, called Sling (from the folks who brought you slingbox), which is a flash website that has most Hulu content and is perfectly playable within the PS3 browser.
